Creating an Inclusive Outdoor Haven at a South Wales School

The Challenge
As seen in the before photo, the school had an open grassed area with minimal usable structure or play value. The slope and lack of definition limited opportunities for pupils to engage with the space. The school approached Adventure Playgrounds Wales looking for a complete solution that would offer inclusive, accessible features and a balance between active play and quiet retreat.
The Solution
Our team delivered a fully bespoke outdoor environment, tailored to the needs of the school and its pupils. The project included:
Rubber Mulch Pathway and Planters
We installed a rubber mulch pathway that winds gently through the space, making it safe and accessible for all users. Raised timber flower planters were placed on both sides of the path to introduce nature, encourage sensory interaction, and support curriculum-based gardening activities.
Lappset Oasis Inclusive Swing
The centrepiece of the garden is a Lappset Group Oasis Swing, designed to provide a peaceful, shaded seating area. The swing is inclusive, with a ramped platform making it accessible for wheelchair users and others with mobility needs.
Timber Picnic Benches
We installed durable timber picnic benches for social interaction, outdoor learning, and relaxation. These add functionality while maintaining a natural aesthetic.
Steel-Framed Climbing Frame on Safety Surfacing
On the upper level, we fitted a Uranium steel climbing frame with curved tubes and rope webs, ideal for building strength, balance, and coordination. It sits on a bright green wet pour rubber surface for added safety and visibility.
The Result
This once-underused space is now a safe, inclusive, and inspiring environment where pupils can play, socialise, and unwind. The thoughtful combination of surfacing, equipment, and seating offers a variety of uses and benefits, including:
